Environmental Legacy

The London Cremation Company is committed to improving the environmental impact across its crematoria operations.

When Queen Victoria’s personal surgeon Sir Henry Thompson wrote his first paper on cremation in 1874, he cited that “it was becoming a necessary sanitary precaution against the propagation of disease among a population daily growing larger in relation to the area it occupied". So, we could say that the impact of cremation on the environment and our surroundings has always been at our heart.

Today, the London Cremation Company continues to be committed to improving its environmental impact across all of its crematoria operations, with pollution prevention and energy conservation as two of our highest priorities.

Our crematoria are managed responsibly and empathetically, with particular emphasis on the landscape, emissions and the buildings. We’ve developed memorial parklands with ecology and sustainability at the heart of our decision making, striking a balance between establishing a respectful and final resting place for the deceased and providing a valuable resource of enrichment for the living.

As a result, we’re very proud to have been awarded a bronze award for each of our crematoria from the Greener Globe Funeral Standard awards. These national environmental and sustainability awards for the funeral sector, showcase businesses’ commitment to minimising environmental impact. We’re looking forward to being awarded silver and above as we develop our environmental plans further.

One way to do this is to be at the forefront of innovation and to embrace new technology, whilst constantly considering our impact on the environment. To this end, we’re delighted that at Woking Crematorium, we’re installing the very newest, state of the art cremator, which will offer a ‘multi fuel’ ability. This includes all manner of gas types, together with electric and hydrogen fuels. Coupled with a highly insulated, and therefore heat retaining, construction, the new cremator will result in considerably lower usage of its fuel source.

This installation will also lead to a great reduction in harmful emissions, in line with current regulations. In addition, it will enable us to recover energy back from the cremator, to use as the primary heat source to the buildings, reducing our carbon footprint even further. We’re delighted that Woking, our oldest crematorium and the first ever in the UK, will have one of the most up-to-date cremators available.

We will continue to strive to find new and better ways of working across the company, to ensure that the LCC and our crematoria are as efficient, sustainable and environmentally friendly as possible.
